Newark has made remarkable progress in reshaping the downtown area of the city. Buildings have risen out of the dust, while historic sites have been resurrected and reborn again.
So how have Newark residents faired during this renaissance? This series will take a look at the rise of the workforce, incomes, and status of the residents in Newark.
With the uptick in companies placing a significant bet on Newark, the median incomes of Newark residents remain low. The following chart gives a breakdown of income by wards (districts) of the city.
As the data shows, the median income for the city of Newark NJ fell during the same 7 year period (see chart Resident Income by Ward).
Overall income levels for 4 of the 5 Newark wards have dropped over the 7 year period from 2011 to 2017. The East ward is the exception as median incomes in this ward had a modest rise during the same period.

Defending national champion Alabama leads the way with 59 to just edge out LSU and Miami (FL) which were tied for second with 58 players each.
After those top three, there is a bit of a drop as Florida, Florida State and Ohio State all have 51 players representing them in NFL camps. Rounding out the Top 10 schools were USC (48), Georgia (42), and Auburn and Oklahoma tied for the last stop with 40 players each.
Overall, there were 327 schools – including all NCAA college football divisions, junior colleges, and foreign players. 103 schools had only one player in an NFL camp at the start of NFL training camps last month. 45 schools had only 2 players represented. Kansas was the lowest ranked school from an FBS “Power 5” conference with 8 players. Iowa State was the next lowest with 11 followed by ACC schools Wake Forest and Syracuse with 12. Independent Notre Dame was the highest school outside a Power 5 conference with 38 players to rank #13. UCF was the next highest as the Knights were tied with Rutgers, Missouri and West Virginia at #37 with 24 players each.

Over the last decade, a significant number of federal governmentt agencies have taken advantage of data technology and data strategists to reap great benefits. With data being created exponentially each day, state and local government municipalities have a unique opportunity to cultivate and use large amounts of internal and external data to improve public health outcomes for its citizens, and to increase the efficiency and quality of citizen engagement.
For many years I have participated in initiatives with federal and state government data integration and analytics. It is evident that local municipalities would advance their efforts greatly by taking advantage of the large amount of data they collect.
3 opportunities for State and Local Municipalities to Utilize a Data Strategist
1. Public Health: Transforming unstructured human service data by merging with structured data to create actionable information.
In today’s environment department of health organizations across the country have a significant amount of data stored in structured and unstructured formats. Valuable information that can enable caseworkers, supervisors and service providers to better serve clients, improve quality initiatives and enable improved management decision-making. This can be achieved by obtaining better understanding of risks, needs and service experiences. Understanding what data you have access to, and its location is the first step to creating solutions.
2. Department of Transportation: Translating data generated by transit applications and IOT devices can provide tremendous insights on transportation use within a municipality or community.
Establishing a way to access and organize data is the first step, as access and analysis of travel data can provide a detailed understanding of new developments and trends in transportation mobility, identifying specific public transportation needs, assessing impacts relating to current and future transportation projects, and prioritizing investments in maintaining, enhancing or expanding current transportation service availability.
3. Public Safety: protecting citizens is often a top priority of any local municipality. Using existing technologies and available internal and external data sources, public safety divisions can establish predictive policing of communities and neighborhoods in their jurisdiction.
Your data is a valuable asset in accomplishing your goals and initiatives. Integrating your data with external social media, statistical, and demographic data to create a 360-degree view of your citizens is within reach.

As a patron of food establishments, and lover of big data, I recently spotted a missed opportunity by many restaurants, diners, and coffee houses I frequent.
90% of these establishments have no way to connect to me once I leave their place of business. Knowing who I am, keeping me connected and engaged, can yield benefits to the bottom line for many restaurant business owners and franchisers.
If you own restaurants, diners, coffee houses, or franchises, here are 3 things you should consider doing to stay connected with your customer:
Enable customers to use social media apps to connect to your guest Wi-Fi.
64% of consumers make a restaurant choice based on availability of Wi-Fi services. And if it is difficult for a consumer to log onto your guest Wi-Fi, more than likely they will not put in the effort to use during their stay.
Enabling customers to connect with Facebook, Google+, and other popular apps, provides a hassle-free and convenient way to offer free Wi-Fi to your customers. And what’s in it for the restaurant owner? Customers connecting to your Wi-Fi via Facebook or Google+, increases activity & visibility on your social media page, and improves your ranking on social media platforms. Through improved rankings, your social media site will garner higher status in consumer searches. And according to SearchEngineWatch, 50% of all mobile searches are conducted in hopes of finding local results
To put this in perspective, in the last 4 weeks alone, I’ve gone to 10 different restaurants seeking a place where I could grab a bite to eat and get a little work done, or just surf. On average, I spend a minimum of $10-$15 per visit. While each of the 10 restaurants had guest Wi-Fi, all of them asked for an internal password. In each case, I looked around for a hint, note, or scribble identifying the password, and couldn’t find it. In 60% of these visits, I simply gave up attempting to access guest Wi-Fi, and left the premises without placing an order. In one case I asked one of workers for the password and got the response, ‘Sorry sir I don’t know it”.
Use social media platforms to communicate and offer deals to local customers and prospects.
Do you have a new dish you created that no one knows about? Want to let consumers know about the new big screen TVs you installed at the bar? Or simply want to generate more traffic at your establishment?
Using Facebook, Google+, and other social media platforms will allow you to communicate targeted messages to patrons and prospects in and around the area of your business. The compelling part about this solution is that Social media platforms offer a low cost, high touch, and high impact method to stay connected, and deliver targeted messages to local consumers.
An additional benefit comes in the form of patrons sharing your message with their social media network. This alone has the potential of increasing awareness of your brand with little effort. Another advantage here is that by using this method, you have the opportunity to capture the attention of patrons active on apps like Facebook and Google+, but are not active in your loyalty program.
Create a user-friendly loyalty app.
Per CrowdTwist, socially connected loyalty program members have an 18% lift in spend. Having your own app for your customers is the holy grail of any consumer related business. If developed right, a custom app will give you a complete view of your customer’s habits, buying patterns, offers taken, total spent….. you get the picture. However to do this right, you need a significant IT budget and resources, to build and maintain an effective app. This is by far the hardest but most effective way to stay connected.
Owning restaurants is a tough business. Finding ways to stay connected to patrons is a driving force in making customers happy., and keeping customers spending their hard earned money at your establishments.
